Mutoni Mwaniki is a widow, ten years ago she had bought land in the town of Kajiado  for about 100,000 shillings. She prepared her house and has been living there with her children ever since. Recently, the previous property owner a woman named Rebecca) contacted her asking for her land back. Unable to defend himself, Musoni went to the Ministry of Home Affairs in Kajiado, with hopes county residents would help him.

Unfortunately she was shocked because the ministry of Home Affairs official approved and accepted the refund of 84,000 shillings on the land she bought for 100,000 shillings ten years ago and vacate the land permanently.

County officials were cooperating with property owners. Muthoni’s failure to evict her property led to her home being demolished later this week and her belongings and children thrown out of the country.

When interviewed by investigative reporters for Citizen TV, Kajiado County Land Commissioner Hamilton Parsaina confirmed he was aware of the incident. He also confirmed that they  reached an agreement with Mr Muthoni to accept a refund and leave the country and have settled the case”. Muthoni claimed he was forced to get a refund.

The property owner was arrested by police Friday on suspicion of illegal property destruction.

The Ministry of Land  launched the Haki Ardhi app, launched a land rights reporting tool , developed with the support of the UK Rainforest Foundation and the TMG Think Tank for Sustainability as part of measures to reduce land problems .
