“I am changing my name to Jarango Jarango because it’s a name that everyone knows, but no one knows. We have already completed the paperwork and will have new ID in the next few weeks. I plan to appear in court.” Heading into last year’s general election, several politicians chose to change their names to reflect their more recognizable identities. But what is the value of a nickname? For some, a nickname is just a way for friends and family to identify someone affectionately.
But politics can mean the difference between winning election seats and doing nothing. For politicians, nicknames are how their supporters identify them and, in some cases, what they bring to the agenda. Name changes are surprisingly easy in Kenya. If he can pay about 6,000 shillings for the legal fees and attorney’s fees for the proceedings, there is no problem. An application to the Prime Minister must be justified.
Some names may be rejected, but nothing is completely prohibited. However, this should be explained using paperwork.
A name change document requires a birth certificate and a statement of someone who knows the applicant. Often one person adds or removes names and they stick with others.
However, in some cases, the name may be changed to a completely new name. For this reason, name change notices usually include all of the individual’s previous names and pseudonyms in case criminal prosecution is required.
