The Standard Gauge Rail (SGR) service from Nairobi to Mombasa is fully booked ahead of Christmas, giving travelers the shot to choose more expensive alternatives such as road and air.
This development is a big boost for bus companies which will see bus fare and airlines rise as families plan to enjoy a seaside vacation.
Airlines have also increased fares from Nairobi to Mombasa as well as other coastal destinations such as Lamu and Malindi ahead of Christmas on advance bookings and tickets are expected to increase further.

Economy class SGR tickets cost Shs 1,000, with first class tickets costing Shs 3,000, but will increase to Shs 1,500 and Shs 4,500 respectively from January 2024.

Travelers booking now to fly from Nairobi to Malindi on December 21 on Jambojet will have to pay up to Sh19,400 for a one-way ticket, up from around Sh9,200.
